New Energy Efficiency Requirements for Low Voltage Motors (EU MEPS)

Hansler complies with the latest efficiency standards and regulations for electric motors and variable speed drives. Efficiency has become a pivotal factor for electric motor companies, due to the need to provide products that are as efficient as they possibly can be. In doing so, more energy can be saved, and less impact is had on the planet. As of July 2023, efficiency legislation will expand to ensure that electric motors are meeting the latest energy efficiency.

The ecodesign regulation (EU) 2019/1781 is a significant development in the European Union's efforts to improve energy efficiency and sustainability in electrical equipment. It represents a progression from the 2009 framework directive, with the primary goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is achieved by setting specific efficiency standards for electrical equipment, ensuring they are designed to be more energy efficient.

Key Features of the Regulation:

  • Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions: The primary goal of the ecodesign regulation is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by improving the energy efficiency of electrical equipment. This is in line with the EU's commitment to combat climate change and meet its climate goals.
  • Efficiency Standards: The regulation sets specific efficiency standards that electrical equipment must meet. These standards are designed to ensure that products are more energy-efficient, which, in turn, reduces energy consumption and lowers emissions.
  • Expanding Scope: One of the notable features of the 2019/1781 regulation is the expansion of its scope. It covers a broader range of products compared to the initial framework directive. In addition to existing types of motors, it also includes drives. This expansion means that more types of electrical equipment are subject to energy efficiency regulations.

New Regulations for Electric Motors

  1. IE4 Efficiency Class:
    • Applicable to three-phase motors with 2, 4, and 6 poles.
    • Operates at a single speed.
    • Rated output ranging from 75 kW to 200 kW.
    • Excludes specific motor types such as brake motors and certain explosion-protected motors (Ex eb, Ex ec, Ex d, Ex de, Ex t).

  2. IE3 Efficiency Class:
    • Applicable to three-phase motors with 2, 4, 6, or 8 poles.
    • Operates at a single speed.
    • Rated output ranging from 0.75 kW to 1000 kW.
    • Excludes specific motor types such as 2, 4, and 6-pole motors with a rated output from 75 kW to 200 kW, motors with certain protections, brake motors with external brakes, and motors operating within specific temperature ranges.

  3. IE2 Efficiency Class:
    • Applicable to various motor types, including:
      • Three-phase motors with a rated output from 0.12 kW up to 0.75 kW.
      • Ex eb increased safety motors ranging from 0.12 kW to 1000 kW.
      • Single-phase motors ranging from 0.12 kW to 1000 kW

New Regulations for VSDs

In phase two of the ecodesign regulation, the drive requirements remain unchanged from phase one. Phase one, which became effective on July 1, 2021, pertains to three-phase Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) with power ratings ranging from 0.12 kW to 1000 kW. Compliance with the IE2 efficiency class is mandatory for AC drives falling within this power range.
